Read: Matthew 26:17-30
Point: Jesus is the Messiah and Savior
Holy Week: Thursday evening
Devotional: When a coach is getting a team ready for a big game, he will save some important instructions right before the team takes the field. While the disciples thought they were gathering to celebrate Passover with Jesus, He was preparing them for one of the greatest battles they would ever face. The next four days would be the most pivotal in all of history.
Before these events even took place, Jesus gave the disciples (and us) a new type of Passover, so that they could remember the importance of what He was about to do. Just as the Jewish people had remembered for a thousand years how God had spared them in Egypt, Christians would remember the sacrifice of Jesus with the Lord’s Supper.
After this, Jesus continued to teach them, because He knew the difficulty they were about to face.
Pray: Heavenly Father, thank You for Your sacrifice. Help us to join with believers throughout history in remembering and celebrating what You have done to bring us salvation.
Family Activity: Share a meal together and ask these questions:
- Why do believers celebrate the Lord’s Supper?
- How can we remember and be thankful for Jesus’ sacrifice this week?
Remind family members that we are to remember and think about Jesus just as Jesus told His disciples to do during the Last Supper they shared together.
Going Deeper:
- Learning more about the Passover, can help you understand God’s plan for salvation throughout the entire Bible. Take time to watch the following video with your family (this one is kid-approved): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1IwMt-KLkSE
- Jesus gave some of His most important teachings this evening in Holy Week. Take time to read John 14-16 (which took place before Jesus was arrested).
