Read: Matthew 28:1-10

Point: Jesus died on the Cross and is alive.

Holy Week: Sunday (Easter)

Devotional: Do you remember that movie?  The one where we left the main character in a hopeless and perilous situation?  I’ve seen enough movies to know that when things seem the darkest, something unexpected is about to happen.

All around Jerusalem on Sunday morning, different characters from our story woke up and relived the events of the past few days. Peter likely replayed his denial of Jesus in his head, and Mary the mother of Jesus tried to deal with the loss of her Son and Savior. The rest of the disciples tried to figure out how to adapt to their “new normal.”  Likely they were all unaware that God had been working the entire time.

When Mary Magdalene and the woman arrived at the tomb, they were surprised to find it empty. God had a plan, a plan that had been thousands of years in the making, a plan for Jesus to defeat death so that we can forever have a relationship with Him. By the time Sunday was over, it would be evident that the story was far from over.

What about the ones who followed Jesus?  What about those that follow Jesus today? Thanks to the sacrifice of Jesus, sin no longer controls the lives or determines the destination for those who follow the Savior. In the words of Jesus, “It is finished.”

Take time to prepare your hearts to worship God fully today.

Pray: Dear God, thank You so much for sending Your son Jesus to save me from my sins by dying on the cross and raising again. Your love for me is so amazing and I am not worthy of Your love, but You freely give it. Thank you! Amen

Going Deeper:

  • Read Acts 2:21-24.
  • Take time to think about how God was working through Peter, to take him from the denier to the one who preached the Gospel less than two months later. Pray that God would show you how He wants you to serve Him through your life.
